Creating a meaningful Masonic experience starts long before a man knocks on the door of the lodge. From the moment someone expresses interest to the years after he is raised, every stage of the journey offers an opportunity to make a lasting impact. As lodge members and officers, it’s our responsibility to ensure that journey is guided, enriching, and fulfilling.
This guide outlines best practices for improving the member experience in five key phases: Prospect, Applicant, Candidate, Continuing Education, and Program Planning.
Prospects
The journey begins when a man expresses interest. A 5 step process can be used to guide prospects:
- Ensure your lodge’s website and social media are welcoming and up-to-date.
- Assign two brothers to be the main point of contact and ambassadors.
- Arrange at least three casual get-togethers to build rapport.
- Invite the prospect to attend various lodge functions.
- Let the relationship grow over time before a petition is signed.
The goal here is friendship first. Only when the prospect feels like a true friend should he seek recommendation.
The Applicant
Once a man is ready to petition, he becomes an applicant. This phase includes:
- An application that clearly explain all requirements including time, financial commitment, and expectations.
- A background check to ensure transparency and integrity.
- A Character Investigation by way of a committee of three discreetly reviews the applicant’s values and motivations.
- Balloting via a unanimous vote which is required, emphasizing the importance of harmony within the lodge.
This phase is not just about screening. It’s about aligning values and ensuring mutual respect.
The Candidate
Every candidate deserves a memorable and transformative experience through the degrees. Best practices include:
- Preparation: Ensure the candidate is informed, welcomed, and supported.
- Coaching: Assign dedicated coaches to guide both ritual proficiencies and personal reflection.
- Advancement: Encourage deeper engagement between degrees with study, mentorship, and lodge involvement.
Don’t rush this stage. Transformation takes time and contemplation.
Continuing Masonic Education
A thriving lodge supports lifelong learning. Consider:
- Hosting speakers and discussions.
- Offering educational materials and resources.
- Tapping into national and international research organizations.
- Creating programs tailored to the interests and aspirations of your members.
Education is not just for candidates. Every Mason benefits from continued light.
Program Planning
A well-run lodge thrives on intentional planning. Build your year around:
- Annual goals and a calendar of events.
- A dynamic team of officers and committee members.
- A culture of inclusion, leadership development, and member recognition.
Start planning early and involve members in shaping the lodge’s future. Fellowship doesn’t happen by accident – it’s built with care.
A lodge that prioritizes the member experience is one that honors the spirit of Freemasonry. Through intentional relationship-building, thoughtful degree work, rich education, and meaningful fellowship, we offer more than just membership, we offer transformation.
Let’s commit to making every brother’s journey not only memorable but deeply rewarding.
Fraternally,
T. A. Westgate.
